The inspiration behind this exhibition was hair stories. When we first started this project I was excited. I instantly made a connection to this because I am a minority at the school and I had many emotional connection to it. I began learning to share my story with my peers along with them learning to share their stories with me.
This project began with a video that showed the struggles of black hair. I was very inspired by this video and the meaning behind it. I found it was very interesting how a group of people got together to talk about this issue. I also found it interesting about how it connected to social justice in our world. I seen my classmates also learn about what its like for you hair to be different. Also how not only how white Americans react to it but also black Americans. Self hatred essay. The first assignment we where asked to complete was a short essay relating to the hair stories.I felt at the time as though I had so many to chose from. I did some further researching to get information about hair stories to see if I could find one to inspire me. After talking with my friends and family I decided to talk about how I've grown to love my hair. I titled this essay self hatred because at the time that is exactly what it was. This essay contained a series of miniature stories from my child hood. These series of events show gives a bit of insight of what it was like growing up being a minority in a predominantly white school. It also shows how this affected my self confidence in a bad way, and how this issue started from an extremely young age. I enjoyed being able to share my stories with others in this unique way.VenetteFor our final product we where asked to create and preform hair stories. My group decided to choose one of my individual stories the series I wrote about. We decided to chose one from my classroom experience with hair. We modified the story a bit to make it seem as though it was a children book. This made the story more child friendly along with an amazing message behind it. There where many obstetrical behind creating this venette in hopes to urn out nice. Overall we created a very nice piece that i9n a small way related to social justice. We hoped for our team outcome that we inspired people to share there own stories.
